Though there is much debate about the origins of this song, its melody is thought to have been originally composed by Jewish-Polish composer Jerzy Petersburski in 1938 who moved to the USSR in 1940. It subsequently received Russian lyrics, and then became a well-known Israeli song with Hebrew lyrics by Avraham Shlonsky.
